Hi,
This afternoon, my wifi knowledge increased 10-fold! I had proposed a
solution for my landlord, who has 2 ADSL lines, 1 for each end of his house,
& who wants to rationalise. I got this Linksys ADSL wireless gateway
(WAG54G) + a couple of USB relays (WUSB54G) for his 2 desk-tops (his kids
have the wireless PC). The main idea was to put the router in the cellar,
next to the ADSL splitter. We thought it should work, as there is no
reinforced concrete in the house, but after getting the connections up &
running with the router next to the PCs, we moved it downstairs.
Unfortunately, 1 PC showed only 2 out of 5 bars (signal strength), & the
other just stayed disconnected! I guess damp brick-work is just as effective
screening as rebars!
Plan B is to leave the router wired to 1 PC, near the other portable PCs, &
have a wired access point (I guess!) as close to the other desktop as
possible.
I was a bit (a lot!) miffed with the performance of my solution (normally, I
make things work!), especially as 1 of my brothers has a similar set-up in
his house, which is just as big & old & damp! I shall ask bro whose kit he's
got.
Another way would be to use a pair of those down-the-mains adapters.
Would any of you have any suggestions how I could get this lot to work?
Regards,
Richard.be
