chkdsk is a slightly misleading name - it should have been named chkpartn because it checks the internal structure of file and space allocation within a partition
You need to run a partition manager to see if the disk drive has partitions properly defined on it FDISK is one of the smaller, simpler facilities that will do that You may need a more sophisticated version of FDISK than the ones supplied with Win95 and Win98 A 2K, or XP version will probably work, and you should find these on the OS install CD's although they may be imbedded within the setup facility - associated with the there are already partitions on this drive, and there is already an OS on this partition display sets. BUT do NOT change any partition definitions before very carefully considering that you will probably lose all data on the drive if you even accept an offer from a partition manager facility to 'fix' errors. If that part of the install finds partitions, and optionally an OS it should SHOULD be safe to install another instance of the/an OS in a different directory - perhaps specify the name as win20051031 note the 11 char name for compatibility with the DOS naming limit JimB ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rod Lindgren" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, October 31, 2005 6:32 PM Subject: Re: HARDware: Laptop won't boot I created a DOS boot disk on a desktop system running XP Home SP2. I added the chkdsk.exe file fro Windows/System32 and booted the computer with this disk. I tried to go to C:, but it came back saying Invalid Drive Specification. I decided to see what happened if I started ChkDsk. The message came back "This program cannot be run in DOS mode.
