DVD (type 5) holds 4.7Gb - the Double layer ones (type 9) hold 8.5 Gb

( Most current DVD drives do both CD and DVD -
if the system doesn't come with a 'Combo drive capable of writing to CD-R
CD-RW DVD-R DVD+R DVD+RW and DVD-RW
then you don't want to know it, because it's either 'OLD' or CHEAP' spec

I would also expect DL capability - especially if you are going to play
movies through it
Also note that most non-PC, DVD players either play DVD- media or DVD+
media, but not both

There is also a DVD-RAM standard for people who want to treat the DVD
platter as a hard drive, changing what's on it lots of times
such as a timeslip system that doesn't have a hard drive

Ignore the HDTV and Blu ray specs for the rest of this year, and possibly
most of next year,
when you will probably be upgrading from current (then outdated) system.

Other thoughts I haven't mentioned - got a TV that you can connect to the PC
has the PC got TV-Out, or S-video out
can it connect to and simultaneously play and record from cable TV input
( how much is that worth to you)
especially as the PC can probably connect to the BBC web site and play
downloadable programs for simply the cost of the broadband connection

And you stand more chance of getting new CODEC's for the PC than for a DVD
player only designed for connection to the TV
(Xvid - MP4 etc. as well as the 'lossless audio ones - if you really want
to use Hi-Fi quality headphones and get surround sound effect)

Technical update from those 'into' using this stuff please
