My first thought was 'boy that's odd and stupid - what if you call from some
other phone' <g> Then I realized that it's not about the subscribers phone -
it's because most spammers work from home. If they get user name and pw either
by Trojans on your system or phishing and attempt to use your ISP, they can't
be completely anonymous in who they are.
They probably are logging the number when you connect. I would expect they'd do
it at the start of the call, not only when sending mail - so they probably
check it then and open or close 25 at that time, or set a flag that you can
access the SMTP as needed.
I wonder how many ISPs require caller id info?
BTW - we have caller id and I never withhold my number, but it seems that
lately we are getting tons of calls where the number is not included. I don't
know if they are purposely not sending them or if it's for some other reason
but I'm about ready to start blocking calls that don't pass a number, in part
because we are starting to get a lot of junk calls, supposedly because my
husband registered online somewhere and gave the home phone number. They insist
that his requested more information about getting an online degree, buying
insurance, and starting his own home business. (So far, all of the junk callers
have included the number.)

I have no idea how they can tell whether yu are withholding your phone
number or not, but its one to keep in mind if encountering problems
sending mail on a dial-up.
