From: "Marc Sims"
I knew there was a catch. The el-cheapo DVD-burners aren't
"top of the line". As the old saying goes "You get what you pay for."
Not always... You missed the entire point, and
focused on one statement totally out of context.
I "kind of" said that, (they can be - buyer beware)
but I also "sort of" didn't...
In the context of the entire reply I gave, I also
said sometimes the drives are sort of "just" a
slightly older model...
The entire idea of my post was NOT to say they
were junk, just that they were not (or may not be)
"state of the art" or JUST released drives.
That entire concept seems to have escaped you...
Once I learned what to look for and which brands to
watch out for, I have done really well "buying cheap"...
I have gotten drives made the MONTH before...
Since the manufacturer was late getting them to market,
they "missed" the price point they "shot for" during
the design phase and the market passed them by...
(That was and IS a great drive BTW...)
Think of it this way... Do "I" really want to pay an
excessive premium for an 16x drive when all I have
(or can get for a good price) are 4x blanks.
You "have to" assume I am not in a "big hurry" to
burn and am willing to wait 15 minutes for a disk to
burn. (I am more than willing...)
At those speeds, I can still do ANYTHING else
on my computer I want at the same time since
I am not working it to death with all sorts of critical
timing issues... Also, even though modern drives
protect against bad burns, if you "push the drive"
(or the computer), a faster burn speed might turn out
to take MUCH longer than a slower one, if the drive
has to do a lot of automatic re-synscs...
Do the same thing with D/L... I have YET to burn
my first D/L disk and have a burner or two around
here "somewhere" that WILL do them, but the DISKS
are still too much...
Like anywhere else, when you are shopping the clearance
deals, you certainly have to watch what they are "pushing"...
FWIW, I am currently using my Pioneer DVR-106d
as my one and only active DVD burner.
Sure I could get something faster, but why bother?
That is mostly what "this part" of this thread was all about...
