So - old OS is XP ___ patched to, and above SP2

New box has a hard drive
and your install CD is ??? with / without SP2

First step - is your new system running from it's own hard drive and OS

Second step - do you have a CD set to re-install the OS on the new system
 - if not, have you taken a backup of it

Third step - copy the old OS to the new drive as a new partition
The OS CD you have may, or may not allow you to do an upgrade install over
the copy of your old OS

Then - I believe that there is a Microsoft facility to do what you want with
XP,
search the archives and/or google and/or MSKB
or perhaps somebody on the list remembers the name/keywords to get it

I have been told by a couple of folks, including the people I bought new box
from, that because the new CPU has a different chipset than the old that I
can't just swap out my HD's from the old box to the new, which had been my
plan. Old CPU is an Intel ?845WN (something like that) and the new is
Athlon 3000. As you all probably realize I'm pretty clueless about how
computers really work so it will be no surprise when I say this makes no
sense to me. I wouldn't have expected the OS to "care" what MB/CPU it was
running on. I had expected I would need to "find" the new hardware but that
once done, the OS and all the applications would run. I had even been naive
enough to think that if I wanted to buy a new HD I could use xxcopy
(discussion from last on this List) to move the files from the old HD to my
USB HD and then back to the new HD.

So, if I have misunderstood I would be forever grateful because the prospect
of reinstalling everything is really daunting.

First -
why do you need a new OS if you already have lots of 'stuff' installed and
working

Second
why not do an upgrade install

One of the nightmares about the new install on this HD is that I apparently
need to reinstall all software once I've got Windows reinstalled. Is anyone
aware of any software that will "move" programs from one drive to another,
making all the needed registry changes, etc.? I recall programs like that
years ago but don't know if there's anything available now and/or if it
works. Even after I get Windows reinstalled, my guess is I'm looking at
10's of hours of reinstallation and reconfiguring; it would sure be nice to
avoid if possible.

TIA,

Harry
