Well, a chevron is a kind of arrow.

Not exactly.

  1. A badge or insignia consisting of stripes meeting at an angle, worn on
the sleeve of a military or police uniform to indicate rank, merit, or length
of service.
  2. Heraldry. A device shaped like an inverted V.
  3. A V-shaped pattern, especially a kind of fret used in architecture.

Google on 'chevron symbol' for a selection. It's roots are in
mathematical symbols, I believe. It's often used in trademarks such
as for Citroen cars.

Um, I was looking for a place that could give me general information about terminology, not specific info about chevrons.
The use is Office is mentioned here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dncdev00/html/vc00i1.asp

As I said, in an area dealing with programming. :-)

Can't suggest what you search for as far as the other things you want
to know about, as I don't know what you are looking for! ;-)

Well, I tried "What do you call the little V-shaped thing at the
right of a drop-down menu" and that was fruitless. (And, I find,
those are not drop-down menus!)

What search string do you recommend?

The above describes my problem. Had I known it was called a chevron, I wouldnot
have needed to ask the question.

Thx.
