What you're referring to is a combo box. It has a hidden list of choices with a "dropdown arrow" to the right of the field to open up the list.

Whether rightly or wrongly this is what I've always referred to the so called chevrons as. Most people when I say. "Chevron" say, "What?" Having been an Army brat much of my early life & in the Coast Guard after that this Chevron is what's it's called when adding V shaped stripes with Slashes on the forearm for the number of years served.

Anyhow when talking to nOObs over the phone they know what a down arrow is so if I lose them with dropdown arrow then I shorten it. I also call the resulting combo box as a dropdown menu to nOObs. The only difference than a regular dropdown menu is that one clicks an arrow versus a menu item name.

Thank you, Wayne, and others for telling me what you call those two items.

However, there must be "official", Microsoft-sanctioned names for them, right?
