We are using old computers (about 1998 vintage) at work with no nic cards. We wanted to connect to a dsl modem. I purchased and installed a US Robotics 10/100 Mbps nic card. Computer was fine before installation. After installation, when I turned on the power the hard drive did not respond in anyway and only the fan was spinning. Nothing else seemed to be working. Is it possible that the nic card shorted out the motherboard? Luckily everything we need was backed up but the computer is dysfunctional now. This is an early E Machine and I have almost no documentation with it so I don't know anything about the components. Does anybody have any idea as to what I can do other than complete replacement of the machine? Additionally I also have an old GW which has to get a nic card as well-also about the same vintage. On the US Robotics box it says that the available PCI slot should be 2.1 compliant-was this the problem? Could the slot have been too old? I have never come across anything like this and I am worried that the same thing will happen to the GW. Unfortunately my boss will not replace the old computers at this time so any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. TIA, Barbara K
