I appreciate your help as always, Carl.  It's just that those fixes aren't 
something I can do right now.  It won't boot to nothing!!  It will with a 
boot disk, but that's a dead end also.

I'm gonna have to make those 6 disks, I guess, and I don't have than many 
laying around. I'll pick up some tomorrow.

So, I was trying to find out about the "recovery console" I had read about.
Now I know!

BTW, one suggestion was just to start with a the XP CD (which I don't have).
