gwscan will only test the drive. It will not repair, unless you
want to write zero's to the drive. I'm guessing not. :) Certain
problems may be fixable without having to write zeros to the
drive. But I would just test and not repair if it offers that
option. That way you have a chance of sticking the drive in
another computer to try and save files.
If the drive tests OK, then use the Recovery Console to effect
repairs. One easy way to replace the ntoskrnl file is to copy
it from "\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386" folder to the
"\WINDOWS\system32" folder. Still remember those dos copy
commands? :) You may have to use the attrib command to remove
the hidden and system file attributes.
