Chkdsk is what caused the problem to start with <smile>.

When I ran disk cleanup it said I had to reboot to do it.  When it rebooted, 
chkdsk ran from the command prompt.

Spinrite!  Hadn't even thought of that for years!  Got a really old version 
around somewhere if I didn't toss it already.

However, the disk has to be running, right?
