I have tried my local Target for reasonable cost negative scanning,
but they were no too bright and while the equipement and price were
adequate, the folks were not. Target used to scan a roll (24 or 36
for $4) at a resolution of about modern digital PS (1.5mb per frame).
Adequate for snapshots. The price is up to $5 now.

We have a local mom/pop shop that does all kinds of video & still rendering, processing & conversion & it's not the local high priced camera shop. They were doing digital photos from CF cards before Walmart installed their Kodak machines. They charge $1 per slide but one can negotiate a price for larger >100 slides but the technician that I know personally states that you may be better off buying a scanner that can do film or slide processing. I suppose you could buy one on eBay then sell it when you're done with the job.
