Sorry Andy I came in with some advice and inadvertently hi-jacked your cry for 
help.

However, the problem is very similar (is it not).  Once I had a problem very 
similar and I did try
it first but I found that one of the Hdd parallel ribbon cables wasn't seated 
fully and the thing
would appear to start up but then stall......... why & how ????

Pulled the cable and fitted a new one (pins probably got cleaned in the removal 
and refitting) and
all was tickety boo again.

this one is a bit cranky -- booted fine today - twice - no probs and will check 
over the rest of the
week with about 3 boots per eve.
