IS there a how-to somewhere?

How to do a backup? How to copy the installation files to a temp folder so that you can burn them to a CD ? How to use fdisk to blow away a non dos partition or to use Partition Magic to do the same thing? How to install Windows?

Unfortunately the procedure would vary depending on how the manufacturer decided to setup the system & the means they use can vary from within the manufacturer from year to year or OS to OS or model to model. My Dell L400 laptop came with a Resource CD which is basically the diagnostic CD & then their version of 98se which was easy enough to copy off with the various drivers but there were only 8 different audio drivers so I had to research the Device Mgr to make sure that I got the correct driver names then open every cab file in the driver folder until I found the cab file that I wanted to save because it was the only one that applied to my system. I had to repeat the above steps for every component that required a driver. In this case I never had to blow away a hidden partition but when I redid my niece's HP Pavilon computer I did have to contend with such a beast of a setup so with all the ways this can vary it would be nearly impossible to write a how to.

FWIW there was a Product Key listed in the oeminfo.inf file that I ass-u-me was placed there for reference but as Chuck has indicated many, many, many times it did NOT match what was on the OEM sticker but that didn't matter since it was just plain old 98se that I very rarely used just long enough to find the driver brand & model numbers so I could research & find the Xp version of the drivers that I needed. Please make sure that you have all the drivers ready to install then do your backup prior to blasting away any hidden partitions if they exist. Sorry but that is about as close to a how to that I think you'll find anywhere.

Can anyone tell me how you would add a 72meg Full Height drive to an Tandon 1200 with a proprietary WD RFM controller? That was a rhetorical question but the point is there was NO How To for that either & when I did it I had to replace the proprietary controller chip before I could run debug. At most one can find HOW TOs for various parts of the procedure. When I replaced the IBM 20g 4200 rpm drive with a Seagate 40g 5400 rpm drive I had no HOW TO either. Sometimes the trick is not so much knowing how to use a tool but when to use which tool so I certainly would NOT start out with a hammer in this case. ;-)
