figured it out (4 ghosts and 5 re-installs later). An older game offered
to install directx during it's own install, and although I chose
"cancel", somehow SOMETHING was changed. I couldn't re-install directx,
as directx 9.0c always checked itself and said it was up-to-date, and
dxdiag reported no errors. BUT, I found a program called "Happy
Uninstall" that PERFECTLY removed dx9.0c and replaced it with 8.1 from
my xp sp1 cd, a quick upgrade back to 9.0c and all is well :) I still
have a slight delay where the screen is black when I exit a fullscreen
game, but I susupect that's normal, just annoying, it's certainly less
than it was before the restore
