It is hard to beat Agent.  I still use Agent 1.9 and they're up to 
version 3 already, but it is a great newsreader, especially for binaries.

Agent will automatically join the binaries [and show them as a single 
"multipost"] and knows about both uuencode *and* yenc, so you can save 
just about anything without having to think about it.

Only other things you'll need for trawling the binaries world is par, 
par2 and unrar.  YOu can get a pretty complete [freeware] package of that 
stuff at <http://www.techsono.com/weapons/pardecoder.html>
