Unfortunately this is all to do with quality control issues at the 
factory !  I would bet that going over the PCB IDE header pins with a 
soldering iron could cure these problems !

Basically what happens is that one or more solder joints don't wet 
properly !  This in turn causes a marginal joint to deteriorate over 
time !  It always gets worse, never the other way.  Eventually the 
joint becomes disconnected completely !  The forces that are applied to 
inserting and removing the plug can temporarily improve things, but 
more often makes things worse !!

I also fear that the situation could become more common with the 
European drive for "Lead Free"  Since it is the lead that is involved 
in the wetting process at the fairly low temperatures used in 
soldering !
