didn't say you were... but these people aren't you - they can't even do a
print screen. :) They replace computers every 5 years and tend to think if
one thing is free, everything should be and they whine about it (or try to
install software that came with the oem on other systems and complain when
it won't install). I find they whine less when they know upfront they
will have routine 'maintenance' costs and need to upgrade important software
periodically and that said upgrades are not free. ("I see theres a new
version of word out, will mine upgrade to it automatically?")
I also don't have to worry if something goes wrong with the operation of the
script and they end up months out of date and get a virus or if the script
fails and buggers up the system. The computer is their responsiblity to keep
updated and until they can handle the script themselves, they can pay the
measly $30 before rebate for another year - it's not like any of them are
poor and can't afford it. It also gives them a new, updated engine each year
which generally works better. Mcafee OEM will not update the software if out
of subscription - AFAIK, norton will.
Finally.. they can pay me $100/hr to configure their system or they can pay
for a new version each year - if they don't take advantage of the rebate,
the ROI is 3 years if they buy and they get a new engine and updated
software.
Plus, I'm not sure the script will work with the OEM versions... which most
have on new machines.. and i despise mcafee - i prefered norton (now
recommend onecare).

Hey wait a cotton picking minute. I'm not doing anything illegal. The
McAfee updates are provided for free on their own website. It's not
like I'm telling people to go to a Warez site. Not all users are
idiots & I have several clients that don't mess with scheduled tasks.
Heck, it's just as easy to change the intervals with which McAfee or
NAV auto updates as it is to mess with scheduled tasks. I've got
several idiot clients that didn't pay NAV when their 90 day free
trial expired & then wondered how their machines got infected. Now
maybe those idiots couldn't be trusted not to be messing with
scheduled tasks normally but after they get my bill for virus cleanup
they usually get the message. I either set them up with a free AV
solution such as Avast or I make them buy McAfee & then set them up
with my script but they are buying the software & certainly aren't
getting my services for free. I maybe easy & cheap but I'm not
free. Heck a few of them have bought newer versions of McAfee then
wondered why they now had to pay a subscription fee so I tell them
that's what they get for not checking with me 1st as I can't be
responsible for software that they decide to install. Some have asked
could I put the old version back on & I tell them I'm sorry. They pay
& I pay but when McAfee tells me that the updates are free for life &
give me their ftp site with a un/pwd then I'll take them at their
word. The only thing I'm not paying for is the automatic updates.
It's not my fault that my computer can schedule the updates
automatically & I don't need that service from them.
