Yes they do ! AFAIAW Windows also silently registers itself on first
connection to the internet using the bios and CPU number as keys !
Few people realise that almost every piece of hardware has a unique
identifier and often a serial number that can be used to trace it !!
This makes it easy for Microsoft to know that when they require me to call
them upon denial of online authentication they know that I am authenticating
a legal copy of Windows. I have accepted that I have to jump through this
hoop. I have nothing to hide. I would gladly name each new component that I
have installed on a rebuild, but Microsoft does not have to ask. They
already know. They were informed (just as you said) when I attempted to
authenticate.
I inform my customers that Microsoft makes the decision as to whether their
Windows XP OEM will fly on a rebuild. On 99% of rebuilds Microsoft allows
authentication when I call them. In fact it has been so long since I was
denied authentication, I do not know how to change Product Keys when denied.
The next time they deny me I will simply ask how to use the Product Key on
the COA on a new Windows XP OEM kit I have in stock, then use it and bill my
customer the $90.00 for the kit I have to use. As long as I keep kits in
stock, I will get the job done. But first I will try to save my customer
from having to buy Windows XP again.
