Still searching for a solution... :-) I've was on my system last Tuesday and
everything was fine. On Thursday I installed a new Belkin KVM switch before
powering on and it was then I first noticed the problem. I've removed the KVM
switch and the problem continues.

The internal modem is on COM 3, while the external modem I tried this morning
is on COM 1 (via a serial port) which should be ok. I disabled the internal
modem before using the external modem. I assume the mouse (which works fine is
on COM 2) and I assume the KVM switch wouldn't cause this kind of problem.

I recently received an email from Acronis that my trial period with True Image
had expired; however, it seemed to be in the active processes in Task Mgr so I
uninstalled True Image. No change in modem status.

I then tried a System Restore taken about a week ago, but no changes were made
to the system by the restore.

I'm not certain if any of this makes a difference but I thought I'd mention it
anyway. Thanks again for your interest.
