I think it was a copycat of the other similar desktops that hoped to
make computers easier and less intimidating to new users.

Copycat is as logical reason as Mrs. Gates - I will leave it to others
to comment on Microsoft's track record on original ideas.  :)

The reps at MS have said (in the past) it was the brain child  of
Mrs. Gates...  I have no hard and fast proof, but remember  them
saying that well...
