The same DSL failure occurred again today, when the computer
was powered up. Attempting to open the router's interface at
http://192.168.0.1 gave: "Firefox can't establish a connection"
(as did, attempting to open any webpage).

I tried rebooting just the router (power off/on), but that
didn't work. I pulled the cable to the NIC and reconnected it
FIRMLY. That fixed the problem -- (until the time ?).

I had reseated the cables before, so why did this work now ?
Maybe I pushed hard enough on the NIC, that it moved the PCB
slightly, and reseated it ?

Any other possibilities ?
