Hi Hugh and all, 1. There is only 1 hard disk in the computer.
2. So, there is 1 hard disk and a cd-writer in the computer right now. This is the new drive I bought when I thought my cd-rom drive had gone bust. 3. I have had a similar situation with XP when I re-arranged my Hdd's in the server and shifted the CD-RW suddenly 2 drives disappeared and no CD-RW I found that althogh the first boot drive was set as MASTER the other 2 were too and the CD-RW. Maxtor drives do not have a jumper when used as slave (I knew that! Cough Cough) but I thought Slaves had the jumper so I put jumpers on. Check the drive settings and remove all Hdd's except the boot drive and put the CD on the second cable and see what happens.
