Subject: Re: 2 questions: HP - Dell
Again, why are the folks at HP so damned protective - hoping for a
few bucks if you loose the restore. All this "modern" business
practice makes me want throw up on some CEO's desk.
One of my customers asked the same question. It was about the open faced
proprietary floppy drive found in HP desktop computers. I told the customer
that HP was forcing sales on their high priced replacement floppy drives. I
sell generic floppy drives for $10.00 each. My customer said, "No! Hewlett
Packard would not overcharge me to replace my floppy drive." To prove their
point the customer contacted HP for the price on a replacement floppy drive.
They found out it was only $64.00 + shipping + handling.
My point here is not for anyone to simply take my word but check prices on a
few things, even if you do not need them. Ask the right questions before you
buy any computer. Find out for yourself how much proprietary replacement
parts cost, and service etc. And never feel that you can not buy a computer
that comes with a Windows XP CD (In the future, a Vista DVD) that is from
Microsoft and has not been fooled around with by the computer manufacturer.
Some technicians justify the restore CD (or DVD) by saying that drivers for
the hardware on that specific computer needs to be installed after a format
job and reinstall of Windows. No problem. The computer manufacturer can
furnish a supplemental drivers ONLY CD or DVD that is automated, and does
not include all of the bloatware, of course. It can be ran after Windows has
been installed from the Microsoft Windows CD. It can automatically look for
hardware that needs drivers and install those drivers, only. If you have
changed video cards, it will to force feed the drivers for the OEM video
which is no longer in use, for example. This will not happen. Computer
manufacturers are highly paid to produce advertising machines under the
pretense that they are building a computer. For those who wish to continue
to identify their wares as a real computer, here is a good term for it,
Computer +
