Yes and no. No you didn't reset the BIOS by jumping the pins, but yes
you did reset it when you removed the battery. So it's entirely possible
that something in there needs to be reset.

Now THAT's strange! I can think of two possibilities: first that you
bumped a RAM stick when you were changing the battery, so now you've got
a RAM stick that the BIOS can't read, and that's derailing things;
second, that you didn't get the new battery in properly. Maybe you got
the new battery in backwards or upside down?
Hmm...you seem to be waiting till after the RAM test to invoke the BIOS
setup? I don't think that's right. I think you have to hold down the
magic key(s) very early in the boot process, there's usually some kind
of information line on the screen before the RAM test IIRC.
