The battery is 3 volts nominal and is probably a "CR2032" coin cell.  
The normal life of these is in the order of 3 to 5 years.  A common 
sign of a battery failing is that the time becomes wildly out over a 
fairly short period, followed by loss of bios information.

FWIW I keep my battery stock in the top of the fridge !!
