I donno if this is relevant to you but I just had to do a re-flash of the BIOS on an old Gateway to get it to boot. It would get to the boot up stuff and hang. Wouldn't see the kb or any drives until I put a boot floppy in it. I connected a floppy drive, nothing else except the power supply, video card, kb and mouse, and flashed it - it was way out of date. Walah! It booted from a floppy and saw all the drives I'd connected and now runs WinMe very well. The BIOS was probably scrogged... This was a POS I was given, been in a closet for two years.
