Rick,
Thanks for the reply and opinions, but I gather you have never sold a used
Retail (non-OEM) Upgrade Version of Windows XP? Can and should,
unfortunately, are not legal terms. Personally, I feel that I purchased the
software to be used in a self-build computers system, legally upgrading from
a previous version of Windows, and should be able to do anything I want with
it if I no longer have it installed. But from my understanding, I only
purchased a license to use the software, not the software itself. It is
unfortunate that in this day and age, we don't really own anything, we just
rent it. I understand the desire to prevent piracy, but I am unsure how the
licensing versus purchase of a piece of software prevents piracy. Seems more
of a constant stream of revenue for the software developers. But I digress.
I am continually upgrading hardware and haven't purchased a retail brand
name computer since a desktop Toshiba Pentium 166 that came equipped with a
full retail version of Windows 95 (circa 1996) on CD. Two of the systems
that the Win XP Pro and Home were installed on have been upgraded to the
MAPS software while the third is defunct, non-functioning, in my spare parts
bin.
I've heard of MS monitoring E-bay for OS sales, but was thinking of
unloading the software locally.
Again, Thanks,
Jim Maki
