A couple of updates for anyone playing with the Vista betas...
I wrote to the list about 4-6 weeks ago detailing my dissatisfaction with
RC2 Build 5744 due to the fact that copying large files across my network
seemed irretrievably broken. I updated the mobo bios but this didn't do
anything to help. I also had done some research in the Vista newsgroups and
could only find a couple of indications that network / lan drivers were the
problem but not many folks were having problems so it was hard to see what
others had done to resolve their problems. Because RC1 Build 5728 did not
offer any additional upgrades shortly following the release of RC2 I
grumbled but have been running RC2 and dual booting to WinXP when I needed
to synch large files to my laptop or another pc on the network.
I've also noted that RC2 seems to really eat up the RAM. For example, with
the Vista OS loaded and only Avast AV (beta), I was using approximately
52-60% of the ram and I thought that 1gb would be sufficient. In fact, Vista
rates my ram as in the 4-5 range.
Today I had some maintenance to do so I decided to experiment. First, I
bought another gb of ram. This cut the ram use in half immediately upon
booting. The 2nd thing I did was disable the on-board lan on my MSI 7125
mobo and instead installed a netgear nic (312) to see if it was made any
difference with the networking issues. Vista interestingly didn't have a
driver for it and requested the disk. Once the driver was installed the
networking problems were solved.
