Casey Pogue spake thusly unto us:
 :: Has anyone had problems installing Microsoft Office 2000 or Project
 :: 2000?  I'm running Win4Lin 2.0 with Windows 98 2nd edition under
 :: Redhat 7.0 on an IBM ThinkPad. Whenever I try to install either
 :: Office 2000 or Project 2000, I get about 20% on the progress bar of
 :: the installation and then it just hangs. I have the same setup on my
 :: desktop machine and all works fine.

after which did Larry Marshall thus speak:
 :: This is a shot in the dark but...there are some problems maintaining
 :: the data stream between devices that are on the same ide channel.
 :: This shows up mostly when writing CDs and isn't a Win4Lin problem but
 :: rather a Linux problem.
 ::
 :: I'm wondering, however, whether it's possible that you're being bitten
 :: by this. Is it possible to do the CD load from one channel and the HD
 :: write on another?

I have _never_ been able to install Orifice 2000 from CD on my
Inspiron 5000 laptop. Similar to Casey, after about 20% the data flow
bogs down to a few _bytes_ a sec. It doesn't exactly hang but after
leaving it for an _hour_ the meter moves only a few percent. My
solution is to copy the CD image to disk (via linux, which takes only
a minute or two---proving that the CD drive has the speed) and then
pointing the installer at the disk image. The install then takes only
15 minutes or so. I've never understood why this behaviour. I just
assumed that win4lin/linux pair was doing something nasty with the CD
reader. Anyone care to explain it to IDE ignoramus.
