doesn't sound like a solution to get an installer functioning since
hdparm doesn't exist on the machine yet.  It's really got me
perplexed, especially since I had no problem installing 7.1 on this
same machine, in the same configuration only a month ago.

I agree. Seems like a Mandrake problem, which I've never used. I'll
keep thinking...
