As an aside, you can get this info with cat /proc/interrupts but most
modern PC motherboards seem to be this way. I guess that's the point
I was making. His ide config is just like mine and I've never had any
such problem.

<grin>...lessee...thus far I've had him do:
hda=windows drive, hdb=cd source, hdc=writer, hdd=hard drive target
hda=hard drive target, hdb=cd source
hda=hard drive target, hdb=cdwriter, hdc=cd source
None of these get him past the point where it tells him what the IRQs
are. Truth is, I don't know if it's stopping because of the ide
checks or whatever follows it. It's been a while since I've installed
Linux (heck, it's been 38 days since I've rebooted Linux).

Yeah...and all that seems correct.

I've had no problems here either but I have installed hdc -> hda.

doesn't sound like a solution to get an installer functioning since
hdparm doesn't exist on the machine yet. It's really got me
perplexed, especially since I had no problem installing 7.1 on this
same machine, in the same configuration only a month ago.
