I have to write this, since I don't feel that I have unreasonable
expectations, and I'd like to get some feedback from other people. Not
to mention the healing power of a good rant ...
I'm a little disappointed.
I took up the "Buy 1.0 now and get 2.0 when it is released" option. I
have no complaints there. Win4Lin is an invaluable part of my working
life now, and I've always found it a very stable and functional product.
In that respect, I'm happy.
Now I see version 3 is out. This is great. Well done. It has some nice
features. Features I don't feel I need.
But if I ever want to upgrade my distribution (and I will), I'm stuffed.
It seems that my options right now are "anything with a 2.2 kernel" or
"pay for an upgrade to Win4 Lin 3.0". If I'd known this was coming I
would have waited for the 2.0 release and bought that. I never wanted
version 1. I thought that what I was doing was showing my support for a
Beta product that I'd tried out and enjoyed.
I was also under the impression (I may be wrong) that 2.4 kernel support
was an in-progress thing. It's not like it was developed in secret,
after all. I never expected that my 2.0 version would have a limited
life span, which is what this announcement has effectively given it.
So yes, I'm disappointed.
I probably will pay for a 3.0 upgrade, since I do want to upgrade my
system. It will most likely be the last time I give any money to
Netraverse. I was very happy with what I bought. I'll probably be happy
with version 3 - but I'm not going to shake the feeling that I've been
let down any time soon.
OK, I've vented. I feel a little better.
Thanks for reading, if you made it this far.
Mike.
