I appreciate the point of the various people who have suggested waiting
to see what the price is, but that's really not the core of my problem
with this situation.

I'm happy with what I have. I like version 2. I don't need simulated
ethernet cards or any of that. If I did, I would have bought VMware a
long time ago.

What I wanted was a nice light-weight Windows environment. Like someone
else said in this thread - I was sick of waiting for Wine. I tried out
the 2.0 beta, liked it a lot, and took up the "buy 1.0 now ..." deal.
Not because I wanted version 1, but because I wanted version 2. I have
never run version 1. The CD sits, unused, on a shelf at home.

I have what I paid for, and I'm happy with it. I have recommended it to
many people.

But now what I seem to have is a product that I MUST upgrade if I ever
want to upgrade my Linux distribution. I'm a Mandrake user, and version
8 is looking to be pretty nice. It is based on a 2.4.2 kernel. If I want
to get any use out of this software that I bought, I can't upgrade
Mandrake. Ever.

Hey, it took long enough for details on getting the enhanced kernel for
Mandrake 7.2 to come out - but that's another story.

This is almost as if Microsoft required people using a given version of
Office to upgrade that when they upgrade Windows. Can you imagine the
fuss that would cause? They should not have to give away Office 97 to
people who bought Office 95, but Office 95 should still RUN on the
upgraded OS if people still find it suitable to their needs.

It's not that I feel the upgrade price (unknown) is unfair - I think it
makes sense. Netraverse cannot be expected to give away upgrades to its
software forever to people who bought it once. I don't expect that, and
neither should anyone else. What I do (did!) expect is for a given
version to be supported for a little longer than six months.

So please don't think I'm griping and trying to get something for
nothing. I'm not. All I want is to be able to use something I paid for
no more than six months ago. I know we live in a world of fast upgrade
cycles, but this is a bit too much.

Mike.
