I didn't hold out. I'm running MDK 8.0, but using a custom 2.2.18 kernel.  
Not a problem.  OK, one.  There is one CD burner that came with 8.0 that 
won't run under 2.2.x :)  But I can wait.  I don't have any "burning" issues.
