Austin, have you EVER mounted an iso image as a loopback file system? 
You're absolutely correct if the filesystem is normally accessible but
that just ain't the case when you mount an iso image.  Try it.  If you
can, by ANY means, mount an iso image and then add or delete a file,
please let us all know how its done.
