I have been running Acrobat 4.05 quite
sucessfully with 0 problems in win98se with win4lin.
I just went to the Adobe website and was unable to find anyplace to
download the English Windows version of the 4.05 reader. There are plenty
of 5.0 versions and also 4.05 versions in other languages and for other
systems --- but in this context a Linux version doesn't help.
And yes, I get the same error when Acrobat starts up under Win4Lin.
Paulthe link for Acrobat Reader 4.05 English is about 1/2 way down the page
However, I took Mike Badger's suggestion, got rid of the offending plugin, and 5.0 now works for me.
But I'm still curious about where the 5.05 English version really lives.
