I was having the same problems with my Mandrake 8.0 system.  Adam Stanley 
from Netraverse doesn't give up on you, stick with it, he finally got me 
going with my system.  I'm sure there are different little quirks with each 
distro that gives them fits, so he just needs to sift through them.
