David,
Exactly how does Wal-Mart threaten Vision World, and why should the outcome
of commercial competition between corporate contenders be of particular
concern to me?
Please explain.
Thank You.

In the paper that you work for, at least last time I read it, it noted that an optical was to be built in the store.
...

Unless the WDN made yet another error with its reporting, one would note that by adding an optical they will split the market into smaller fractions rather than adding too it. This is likely since I doubt most will drive to LSE for eye glasses. Furthermore even pointing that out was to further add to the other posts that noted businesses that need to keep their eye open.

Another difficulty with Wal Mart in Winona... has anyone ever noticed how bad traffic is on Mankato at 4 pm after a train and during the school year? Add in more traffic to a concentrated area and a recipe for Urban destruction will be set forth. Interstate highways and external development hollowed out major urban areas leaving them with impaired economies due to reduced commerce, employment and housing. Now a similar fate threatens Winona. First, Wal Mart will come then already evident traffic problems will become further exacerbated, then follow the layoffs and road expansions. ... Of course relying on antiquated internal combustion technology for propulsion could also be examined...

Then there is David's private list of businesses that will see their doors close and how long it will take for redevelopment of the assets. Sure Wally may come but will it increase the preforming assets in Winona? I doubt it.

Of course, we could change the course of these problems... most of the prior problems could be solved with ammonium nitrate*. We could tear down two or three bluffs, and use that material to fill the lakes. The west lake can be developed as housing and the east lake can be developed as a huge strip mall. Of course, environmentalists will protest this while the free market capitalists applaud it.

The free market capitalists will get applauded by newspaper editors for recognising early on the benefits of removing those cursed bluffs for reclaiming small patches of land. These heroes will receive significant recognition for valiantly engaging those barbarians, the environmentalists, who were impeding "progress." Besides, it is only two or three bluffs of unique wildlife habitat, there are still thirty-odd others. Furthermore, Bambi really does not need a home that is a Disney myth.

That situation with the environmentalists can be dealt with by declaring the enviros illegal combatants after they protest. The environmentalists then get sent to Guantanamo where they are hanged for crimes against consumerism. The public may still become uneasy with this so some should plant fake stories in the "ultra-nationalistic US media" and "press" that according to various unnamed intelligence sources these combatants were receiving aid from France, Germany, Russia, China, India, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Nicaragua, Canada, Iraq, Brazil, Libya and Cuba. However, the public should be alerted that these combatants are not a red level threat since their assets have been frozen by one or two governments and there is not proved connection to Al Qaeda. It is also a plus to encourage massive flag waving exercises so more forget about what is happening.

At this point, some will still become uneasy when it is recognised that this is too much police work for a simple lake fill in. It will also become obvious that capturing all the combatants is nearly impossible so it is essential to recognise that the last several paragraphs were entirely sarcastic to drive home a point about Winona's development situation over the last several years.

You are Welcome.

* Ammonium nitrate is the low cost successor to trinitrotoluene (TNT) that was developed shortly after WWII.

One of the things that I am concerned about being here in Canada, is the level of anti-American sentiment that I am running into. I am shocked by it... and I am not saying that it is not warranted, I am shocked because it is warranted.
