When the port authority was first established,
there was some controversy about having unelected people making development
decisions. It was decided that if we were to have a port authority, it
should include at least some elected officials so that the people could
indirectly have some influence over the decisions. It really hasn't worked
that way. The port authority is a little fiefdom of its own. It has
a lot more to do with development in the community than the elected
officials. I don't have any particular beef with any of the decisions that
have been made, but the structure does not seem to work as designed. There
should be more public input into the development decisions.
