If the reasoning of the parade planners is as Scott
Lowery wrote, there would be some good arguments for
letting political parties be in the parade. The
political messages are just another advertisement.
Half of the parade is about advertising. The parade
planners get into some pretty subjective territory is
the standard is "entertainment." Could the
politicians play music or drive around in crazy little
cars?
The parade could be shorter without those floats
advertising other town festivals on them. Someone
could argue that politicians walking down the street
and shaking hands are just as entertaining as pageant
winners sweating throught their make-up and doing the
parade-wave or a restored convertable with a big
business logo on it.
As long as there are marching bands, fire trucks, and
horses I'll be happy.
