I went to see _A Winter's Tale_ last night and
thoroughly enjoyed it! We haven't been saying much about the Shakespeare
Festival, but it is an outstanding organization made up of incredibly dedicated
professionals with a wonderful vision. I have done some volunteering in
the costume shop and as an usher and have had a blast working with the company
staff.
After the show last night there was something
called a "company conversation"--basically the cast and the director came out
after the performance and answered questions about the show, etc.
Each one agreed that they have been so welcomed by the community that it has
made their stay here quite fulfilling. (they also appreciated their
lodging in the new Winona Lake Apartments Dormitory!)
I also assisted some friends in hosting a picnic
for the cast and crew at Farmer's Park on Monday. I heard the same
thing there about how welcomed they have felt and how much they are enjoying
being a part of something new and exciting.
BTW one of the needs I heard folks have was
for a laundry service. Does anyone know of a place in town that individuals
can bring laundry to? An example of the need was by one of the costume
shop interns. Before the show opened she was working 10-12 hour days and
would often have costumes that she brought home at night to wash, but just never
seemed to have the time to get to her own stuff. If anyone knows if one of
the laundromats offers or might be willing to offer such a service, let me know
and I'll pass it along.
Anyway, I'm hopeful that the success of this first
season will help the festival to grow and the city to develop
economically. One of the things that fest-goers are looking for is fine
dining and it would be great to attract some great, new chef to come to
town!!
Is anyone aware of any organizing around more
economic development planning for the city related to downtown and the
festival?

PS _A Midsummer's Night Dream_ is a
magical and hilarious show that I hope you all will try to attend if you haven't
yet!!!

Festival

A colleague of
mine here in the Twin Cities traveled to Winona over the weekend with his wife
to take in the Shakespeare. He very much enjoyed it. So, Winona is
getting at least some wider attention for having put this on.
Congrats.
