A "nice" restaurant would certainly be nice, but it will need to survive on
more than a few summer visitors to the Shakespeare Festival. Restaurants
usually live or die on: a) lunchtime business crowd, or b) evening
entertainment crowd. Therefore, to be attractive for a restaurant operator
there must be: a) a large concentration of steady jobs nearby, or b) a
concentration of entertainment attractions nearby. If Winona can boast
neither, then a nice restaurant is not likely to make it. Even downtown
Minneapolis, with about 160,000 people working within a few blocks has seen
some high profile, high-end restaurants go under lately (e.g., Aquavit). As
the economy goes, so go nice restaurants.

When I'm in or near Winona visiting family we go to the Harbor View,
Hillside Fish House, or Drugan's. Where do people in Winona go for a "nice"
dinner? I'd love to hear people's answers and why.

Phil Carlson, Minneapolis
