[Winona Online Democracy]
Here are some
quotes from Stephen Carter's book on
Civility:
Our duty to be
civil towards others does not depend on whether we like them or not(chapter
2).
Civility requires that we sacrifice for strangers, not just for
people we happen to know(chapter 4).
Civility creates not merely a
negative duty to do no harm, but an affirmative duty to do good (chapter
4).
We must come into the presence of our fellow human beings with a
sense of awe and gratitude (chapter 6).
Civility assumes we will
disagree; it requires us not to mask our differences but to resolve them
respectfully(chapter 8).
Civility requires that we listen to others with
knowledge of the possibility that they are right and we are wrong(chapter
8).
Civility requires that we express ourselves in ways that demonstrate
our respect for others (chapter 9).
Civility allows the criticism of
others, and sometimes even requires it, but criticism should always be civil
(chapter 12).
What do others think of these?
Thanks to Randy
Shenkat for forwarding these to me.

I have been exploring some of E-democracy's
materials on civility--guidelines for member's exist which include a "bill of
rights" and some tips or guidelines for online communication.
As I try to put these together into a coherent
group for our members (BTW Steve Clift, if you're reading this, I'd appreciate
any links to help me find some of those things--shame on me for not
bookmarking!), maybe folks can share ideas and concerns in light of the recent
civility issues we've been experiencing.
