[Winona Online Democracy] The "pruning" if you could call it that, was committed by a woman that I took to be a behind-the-counter employee and a male accomplice. They had a pole saw/shear but didn't seem to know one end from the other. The tree, although greatly diminished, isn't in as bad a shape as some of those downtown. I just happened by as they were doing the dastardly deed and was less than civil in my demeanor. In hindsight, I should have insisted they stop rather than just rudely voicing my opinion about their activity.
In a related matter: Three large trees across Fourth Street from the Courthouse were cut down last month. The owner of the house at that location told me that he had expressed concern to City Hall that the trees had caused the sidewalk to need to be replaced at his expense. As I recall, the homeowner said the city engineer offered to have the trees removed, but later the homeowner decided he wanted the trees to remain even if it meant possibly replacing sidewalk sections in the future. But it was too late as the tree contractors had been informed and they apparently have a financial incentive to keep their chainsaws busy. That's the story as I remember hearing it second hand. ----- Original Message ----- From: "arlene prosen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; "Online Democracy" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: 21 juillet, 2004 20:00 Subject: Re: [Winona] Online Civility (steamed about vandalism) > [Winona Online Democracy] > > Just returning and read about the tree.
