Well, Terry, we no longer have Ridgeway or Dakota,
so that is two fewer schools than we had previously and it did not solve the
district's financial woes--both expenses and revenues were lost as a result of
the district closing these schools. Closing schools only seems
to work if the families continue to send their children to school within
the district and the district retains the per pupil funds for those
students. I admit this is a gross oversimplification.
I think the challenge now is to create a sense of
good will with the families who have school age children by being willing to
meet their needs in addition to the desire of families with no
children in the district to save on their tax bills.
I know it is not a popular idea, but I think
consideration of education vouchers--not necessarily for the entire per pupil
funding amount, but a portion--for all school age children within the geographic
boundaries of the district, would eliminate the devisiveness between the
families with children who value choices in education. Our numbers have
grown as result of the school closings in the outlying areas of the
district. Food for thought.
