[Winona Online Democracy]
Thanks, Les. The site is very imformative. One of the things that stood out for me when I reviewed it was an issue dear my heart--co-curricular activites.
At this time--especially with so many families having two parents working outside the home--it is so important that our young people have choices for after school activities that nurture non-academic interests. For so many families, the time and funds for this type of thing are extremely limited. For too many young people this can be the difference between developing a sense of a community of peers, self esteem and confidence or hanging out with a crowd that has little direction and feels socially put down.
I know that the opportunities I had as a youth made a huge difference--there would have been no performing arts (drama, dance, forensics, swing choir or madrigals) for me if my single, working Mom would have had to come up with a fee in order for me to participate in these things in High School. I hate to think of what might have happened if I hadn't had this focus for my energies during those years.
Isn't that part of the promise of public education--that all children have a chance for something better? If our schools don't meet the needs of families with youth and few other resources what kind of message do we expect that they'll receive about the American Dream of being able to become whatever they can conceive? How can the half of our families with incomes below the medium believe this when so many opportunities are simply out of reach? It's hard to believe that you can go places when you run into brick walls everywhere you turn.

Terry,
I encourage you and other community members to attend one the the numerous
Learning levy information sessions that Superintendent Durand is conducting
throughout the district and the community this month (over 20!). Your
question
and many other questions are addressed during those sessions. You may also
obtain information about the Learning Levy at the following WEB site:
www.LearningLevy.org (www.LearningLevy.com also works)

In the past few years, I thought we had pretty much agreed we had too many elementary schools. I'm hearing lots of information about the referendum but nothing about our surplus of schools. Did we get a lot more kids somewhere or has the issue been put on the back burner?
