I don't think I missed your point at all, Eric, and I maintain that your initial response to Paul's letter was not helpful to an understanding of the issues. I've made some suggestions as to what I believe would be helpful for understanding our local economy and employment issues within a context greater than simply the city's actions. Are you willing to facilitate the sharing of that kind of information?

Regardless, I see that we agree that a factual discussion is what's called for and that is what I will attempt to promote.

Sincerely,

Kathy Seifert

Kathy,

You're missing the point. The point is that we hear a lot of criticism
and rhetoric regarding the City and its role in economic development
without any facts attached to such criticism. The data on the State of
Minnesota job loss of 47,000 jobs was taken from a publication produced
by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. The
point is that there have been heavy job losses in our cities, our state
and nation especially from 2000 to 2002.

The good news is that after the initial job loss from 2000 to 2002,
there were some gains made. I thought I would note some of the small
business expansions that have been good for our community. The notes
were not meant to be a statistical analysis.

The Minnesota Employment Review and Minnesota Economic Trends are
publications of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic
Development. The data provided on Winona was taken from Unemployment
Statistics using annual average labor force and employment.

The continual stabs at lack of employees, lack of industrial expansion,
lack of job creation, and "regressing" prompts a response to show some
of the good things that have happened to our regional center. There is
much left to do and we will focus on continuing efforts to further help
business and residential growth in our community. I'm glad that you're
willing to acknowledge economic forces outside of the City of Winona
that play into our ability to attract and maintain industrial and
commercial jobs.

If we're really interested in meaningful communication, then let's try
and get off the negativity and opinion page and onto some actual factual
discussion.

Sincerely,
Eric Sorensen
