[Winona Online Democracy]
I hate to second guess my friends in the community
who have spent countless hours developing this recommendation...but I cannot
support the changes proposed for the high school. They would ruin the
building.
I have spent half a lifetime trying to preserve
important buildings in Winona. It will be another 12 years before WSHS
hits the generally recognized benchmark for historic preservation...fifty years
(it's from '67, right?)...but I think the building is significant. If for
no other reason than the view. I had never thought of the library as a
'building within a building' before, but it is quite an apt description. I
remember it as a calm space in the middle of a swirl of activity.
The Lincoln sale is over and done with...let's not
trot that one out anymore. I think it was gratuitous, personally, for the
WDN to whip the school board with it again this week. At the time it
seemed to be the thing to do. Let it go.
I still say the answer is to lease space in the
Winona Knits building. That money can be levied without voter
approval. Because Pete is trying to build traffic out there the district
might even be able to swing a sweet deal on custom space. Could Community
Ed do the same thing? Could they find a space and lease and avoid
taking over Goodview?
Let's stop using budget cutting as an opportunity
to grandstand. I am tired of hearing "THIS IS WHAT YOU VOTED FOR." I
didn't vote for it. Our kids deserve better.
Kudos to Superintendant Durand for saving millions
on the middle school bond issue through refinancing. Those dollars can
mitigate the lease levies that I believe should be investigated...and it doesn't
impact the general fund.
I know that at least one school board member reads
these posts. I would be very pleased if M. X were to write me off list and
tell me if I'm being fair.
